Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
We all worry about
things important to us in our daily living. Obsessive-compulsive
disorder differs from this worry as it causes the individual to change
his or her daily life. It is characterized by uncontrollable and
persistent feelings or thoughts (obsessions), and rituals which
individuals use to try to prevent or rid themselves of these thoughts
(compulsions). Common compulsions are persistent hand washing, house
cleaning for fear of germs, or repeatedly checking over something for
errors.
As with many other disorders, if an individual continues to suffer with
untreated symptoms, they are prone to developing other psychological
disorders, such as depression and may have a tendency to abuse alcohol
and drugs. It is important to seek treatment as soon as possible. Most
cases can be successfully treated.
